Man accused of Penrith attacks claims he acted as peacemaker

Carlisle Crown Court

[A] MAN has told a jury he did not violently assault a female couple – and has denied aiming any homophobic abuse towards them.

Kyle Jonathan Russell Hill, 20, is one of two men on trial at Carlisle Crown Court. Hill and 35-year-old Kevin Alexander Docherty have each pleaded not guilty to two charges.

These allege assaults on Laura Price and Yazmin Wood, which caused actual bodily harm, as violence flared next to Penrith Leisure Centre late on August 18 last year.

Both women have alleged that Hill and Docherty made “derogatory” and homophobic comments, before participating in kick-attacks which left them injured.

Ross Paterson, 29, of Unitas Crescent, Carluke, has admitted ABH assaults on both women. But Docherty, of Castlebay Street, Glasgow, and Hill, of Glenafeoch Road, Carluke, each claim they acted to prevent violence and injury.

Hill told jurors today (WED) he made no homophobic comments, and insisted both he and Docherty desperately tried to stop Paterson’s violence.

“Were you involved in any assault on these two ladies?” Hill was asked by his lawyer, Julian White.

“No,” Hill replied.

The trial continues.
