[A] JUDGE has jailed a Longtown man for sexually assaulting a woman, describing his criminal behaviour as “deplorable”.
Michael James Heffernan, 34, was handed a two-year prison term at Carlisle Crown Court today (MON). Heffernan had previously pleaded guilty to one charge of sexual assault following an incident on May 12.
He was said to have assaulted the woman despite her “screaming” at him to keep away. His victim later told police how she was left feeling “totally humiliated”, “degraded” and “all over the place, emotionally”.
Heffernan, a long-distance lorry driver, had taken cocaine and alcohol in the hours before the incident, the court heard.
Jailing the defendant for two years, Recorder Ciaran Rankin told him: “This was deplorable, bullying behaviour of an extreme nature.”
Heffernan, of Graham Street, Longtown, must also sign the sex offenders’ register for a decade.
