[A] driver has died and another has been seriously injured after a road traffic collision occurred on the eastbound A66 near Center Parcs.
Police were called today (14th August) at 12.15pm following a multi-vehicle collision.
The A66 was closed in both direction between Kemplay roundabout and Temple Sowerby.
Dr Theo Weston said: “At about 12:15pm today, two BEEP Fund doctors attended at serious road traffic collision on the A66 just east of Penrith when a van towing a caravan collided with a car.
“Very sadly the driver of one vehicle died at the scene but the driver of the other vehicle, who suffered serious injuries, was trapped for a while before being released by the fire service.
“The two doctors along with NWAS paramedics & the doctor/paramedic crew from the Great North Air Ambulance, Pride of Cumbria, were able to provide immediate enhanced medical care for his injuries before he was flown to James Cooke Hospital in Middlesborough.
A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “At 12:18pm firefighters from Penrith were called to reports of a collision on the access road to Center Parcs, Whinfell Forest.
“Crews attended the scene and found there had been a collision between a car and a van which was towing a caravan.
“The van had overturned as a result of the collision and two people were trapped in the vehicle.
“The team used electronic cutting equipment to release the casualties and they were both passed to the care of North West Ambulance Service.”
The A66 has now reopened.
