Residents in Cumbria are receiving a large volume of phone calls today from persons purporting to be from HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs).
The claim is that there is a warrant out for their arrest as they owe money and there are various ways to pay. The call starts as an automated message, then the recipient is put through to person.
A Cumbria Police spokesman said: “The calls are a scam and persons are advised to end the phone call immediately and to never disclose any personal information.
“No legitimate agency will contact you in such a way. The persons on the phone can be quite rude and forceful, but please just end the call.
“Cumbria Police are aware of this national scam and are advising residents to not panic and to not give any personal information away.”
