Workington MP Mark Jenkinson has welcomed news that two schools in his constituency are set to benefit from multi-million-pound Government funding.
Cockermouth’s Fairfield Primary School and Cockermouth School have both made successful application bids for the Condition Improvement Fund for the 2021-22 round.
The award is part of a nationwide £483 million funding boost that will go towards 1,466 projects at 1,199 academies, sixth form colleges and voluntary aided schools across the UK.
The core priority of CIF is keeping eligible academy, sixth form college and voluntary aided school buildings safe and in good working order.
Most CIF funding aims to address issues with significant consequences that revenue or Devolved Formula Capital funding cannot meet. These include issues with poor building condition, building compliance, energy efficiency and health and safety.
Local authorities, large multi-academy trusts and large voluntary aided school bodies, such as dioceses, instead receive a School Condition Allocation to invest in condition priorities across their schools.
CIF also supports a small proportion of expansion projects for Ofsted-rated good or outstanding academies, sixth form colleges and voluntary aided schools that need to expand their existing facilities and floor space, either to increase the number of admissions in the main year of entry or address overcrowding.
Mr Jenkinson said: “I am very pleased Fairfield Primary School and Cockermouth School are in line for funding to make much-needed improvements to school buildings.
“To deliver this we need to ensure schools have the facilities and classrooms they need to support the education our children need and deserve. It has been an exceptionally difficult times for schools in this constituency and elsewhere which makes this announce doubly welcome.
“Every child deserves an excellent education and the opportunity to fulfil their potential. I will fight to ensure that every child across the constituency has that opportunity to be the best that they can, in whichever field they choose.”
Mark has set out his blueprint for greater investment in schools to help maximise opportunities for young people across the constituency via his ‘My Plan’ for education.
As part of the levelling up agenda, the Government is investing an additional £14 billion into schools before 2020-21, Mr Jenkinson said.
