A Penrith woman will stand trial later this year accused of causing an elderly pedestrian’s death by careless driving in the town.

Susan Strong, 48, faces one charge which arises out of a collision at Southend Road just before noon on October 14, 2019.

This occurred at a junction, involving an Alfa Romeo vehicle and pedestrian Kathleen Boddy, who was 77 and suffered serious injuries from which she died four days later having been transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

At Carlisle Crown Court this afternoon, Strong pleaded not guilty to one charge. This alleges that she caused the death of Mrs Boddy by driving an Alfa Romeo without due care and attention.

A date for a trial in front of a jury has been fixed. The hearing is due to start at the crown court on November 2 and, it is estimated, will last around three days.

In the meantime, Strong , of Pearson Court, Penrith, was granted bail by the judge at today’s hearing, Recorder Richard Archer.

Police issued a public appeal for witnesses following the collision, and a force spokesman confirmed Mrs Boddy had moved to Penrith from Essex shortly before the incident.
