A Workington man is spending 100 hours cleaning up his local community while raising vital funds for a local hospice charity.

Kevin Greenhow, 55, has signed up to complete the Captain Tom 100 Challenge.

The Captain Tom Challenge encourages people to complete an activity based around the number 100 while raising money for charity.

Kevin was inspired to get involved and decided to clean up his local area by completing 100 hours of litter picking and fundraising for Hospice at Home West Cumbria.

Kevin said: “Like lots of people, I was inspired by the way Captain Tom raised money and spirits during the pandemic in 2020.

“When I heard that his family were encouraging us all to undertake a charity challenge of our own based around the number 100, I wanted to get involved.

“Like many others, I get annoyed at the amount of litter that I encounter, particularly as much of it is recyclable.

“So I set myself to do 100 hours of litter picking, starting on Captain Tom’s 101st birthday on April 30, and concluding on his 102nd birthday exactly one year later.

“It works out at around two hours per week.

“The reason I have chosen to support Hospice at Home West Cumbria is because of the invaluable services they provide to families when they need it most. They offered their support to my family when my mother was terminally ill, and knowing that help was available was very reassuring.”

“I am now eight weeks into my challenge and have managed to achieve just over 20 hours, which means I am ahead of my required two hours per week, which is good as I am trying to make the best of the summer weather!

“Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, only 44 weeks and 80 hours to go!

Gemma Bell, fundraising co-ordinator for Hospice at Home West Cumbria, said: “Thanks Kevin for choosing to support us with your Captain Tom 100 challenge, this is a great idea and I am sure the local community appreciate the hours you have been putting in ensuring the local area is clean and tidy.

“You have raised a brilliant amount so far, and still have 80 hours to go!

“This is fantastic and we are extremely grateful for your support.”
