Drivers in the Lake District are urged to act responsibly after selfish parking today has stopped ambulances and buses using the roads.

A post from Allerdale police on Facebook said: “Selfish parking has caused large tailbacks, cancelled buses and blocked ambulances at Borrowdale Valley.

“Everyone of these vehicles will receive a ticket from Allerdale proactive team.

“Heartbreaking to see babies crying in hot cars stuck in traffic due to selfish parking.”

Cumbria police has asked people to park considerately and observe road markings if forced to park on the street but has urged drivers to use parking facilities.

It said: “We are urging motorists to use dedicated parking facilities and parking areas and not abandon vehicles and cause obstruction.

“Irresponsible parking endangers yourself, pedestrians and other motorists.

“Access for emergency services should not be obstructed by abandoned vehicles.

“Please be respectful and act responsibly.”

It said Ambleside and Bowness areas were also bad for irresponsible parking.
