Work has been completed on the popular Ullswater Way to improve a 1km section.

The section of the route – at Priest’s Crag at Watermillock – is well used as it’s close to a number of campsites. However, erosion and a tendency to become very muddy in bad weather meant that work was needed.

The work, which included resurfacing and drainage works started in May, has recently been completed just in time for summer.

Lake District National Park Authority area ranger, Suzy Hankin said: “Prior to coronavirus we had raised around £13,000 with the help of the Lake District Foundation. We’d like to thank everyone who donated as it really does make a difference and means that we’ve been able to complete this work and can continue to care for, manage and maintain this route.

“The Ullswater Way is an ideal first walk in the Lake District as it can be broken up into manageable sections and much of it is easily accessible. Or you can choose to do the full 20-mile circuit in one go if you are feeling adventurous.

“The views are spectacular and there are many places to stop on your way round for a cup of tea or an ice cream and if it gets too much for you can easily jump on one of the historic steamers to help you along the way. It’s ideally placed to leave the car behind and explore this beautiful valley on foot, by bike, boat or by bus.”

Sarah Swindley from the Lake District Foundation said: “We are passionate about caring for this beautiful national park. We are thrilled businesses, locals and visitors all share that passion with us and helped raise nearly £13,000 for the ‘LDF Ullswater Way Fund’ back in 2018/19.

“I would like to thank all those who got involved and donated. Also, I’d like to say a massive thank you to the Lake District Rangers team who carried out the recent repair work at Priests Crag. The Ullswater Way is ready to go for a busy summer season ahead.”
