A doctor working in West Cumbria has raised almost £1,000 for charity by completing the London Marathon.
Dr Raghu Vedapanakal, who works at Flat Walks Health Centre in Whitehaven, successfully completed the London Marathon on October 3.
Dr Raghu hopes to have promoted fitness and healthy living amongst his colleagues, friends and patients. He trains with Cockermouth-based Derwent AC running club twice a week and also does regular yoga and cycling.
“I have never been so happy in my life so far, it was one of the best experiences of my life – the crowd, music and how very well organised it was to run the London streets and yes the sun stayed out too to greet us,” he said.
“I finished in 3 hours 56 minutes for the full marathon. This was my second marathon – having completed Windermere Marathon earlier this year in 4 hrs 36 minutes.”
Dr Raghu raised £980 for Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s research charities.
“I was thinking of each and every one of my colleagues, friends and family members throughout the 26-mile run,” he said.
“My challenge is to participate in different marathons across the world in future and aim to get more people involved in fitness activities. If I can run a full marathon after starting to run only two years ago from scratch, I am sure this would inspire many of you out there too.
“Staying fit involves devoting some quality time regularly for health and wellbeing. It is very important to look after our own health and be role models for our patients, family and friends.”
