Eight ties in the Benevolent Cup dominated the Cumberland County League programme.
Six of the games pitched teams from the Premier Division against sides from Division One.
UniSun Athletic of Division One surprised Wigton Harriers in their own back yard at Barton Laws defeating the Premier League side 3-2.
Sam Irving and Ian Johnston checked in with the home side goals which were insufficient to match the strikes from Dave Barnes, Luke Ruddick and Alex Park, putting UniSun into the hat for the next round.
Mirehouse, with a home tie, also overcame a Premier League side Carlisle City Development. The game proved to be a tight affair which went into extra time and was eventually decided by a penalty shoot-out.
A double from Kyle Bailiff and a strike from Nathan Dryden for Mirehouse was unable to prevent the game ending 3-3 after extra time. Ryan Metcalf, Ewan Bowyer and Arron Roberts scored the goals for Carlisle City.
In the gathering gloom, Mirehouse edged the result 8-7 in the penalty kick lottery.
Cleator Moor Celtic Reserves had home advantage against Premier Division Gosforth but were unable to make it count, losing out 7-2.
Robert Carr and Andrew Bulman each grabbed a brace for Gosforth, with Robbie Bagley, Sam Tallentire and Rhys Singleton completing the away side’s total. The Green and White’s replied with two from Liam Johnston.
Workington Development entertained Division One leaders Whitehaven Miners on the St Benedict’s school’s plastic pitch and the Reds were leading at half time with a goal from Tom Houghton.
However, they were pinned back early in the second period with Miners edging into the lead 2-1 with Owen Wood and Bradley O’Pray hitting the net.
Parity was restored prior to the end of the half when Logan Bosward brought the scores level and then the Reds went on to win the penalty shoot-out 5-3.
The Whitehaven Amateurs Reserves v Workington Athletic tie was switched to West Lakes College due to the unavailability of the Amateur’s facility. Athletic took the tie 4-0 with Gregg Armstrong and Liam Stamp both hitting the net and a Tommy Whitehead double completing the total.
Pirelli hit nine on their trip to the seaside at Silloth. Jordan Atkinson led the way with four while Jordan Pritchard-Farish, Alex Bell, Ben Campbell, Dean Batey and Luke Firth completed the scoring. Tommy Dixon supplied Silloth’s lone effort.
The two all-Premier Division clashes ended with victories for both away teams, Northbank and Cockermouth.
Cockermouth took extra time to overcome Aspatria 2-1 with the scores even after 90 minutes. Luke Graham with a goal for Cockermouth was cancelled out by Aspatria’s Jed Graham. Keith Skillen scored the extra time decider for the visitors.
Depleted Maryport Athletic hosted Northbank who eased to a 3-0 victory with goals from Jack Little, Elli Travers and Ellis Dickinson.
