Workington’s leading goal-scorer Scott Allison has a date with the specialist on January 5.
Allison, whose season has been severely impeded by a recurring shoulder problem, underwent an operation last week.
Manager Chris Willcock has been hopeful of getting Allison back in the firing line for February, so his appointment in the New Year should provide an update on that forecast.
Allison said: “The surgeon said it went really well so when I go back to see him hopefully I will get some good news then.”
The absence of the Reds’ most consistent marksman has clearly affected their scoring credentials this season, which has been highlighted by Willcock.
“If you look at the leading teams in the League our goals for column isn’t as good as it should be compared to the others. That’s an area we do really have to improve in.
“We have done well for the most part with clean sheets but we haven’t been scoring the goals that we need to,” said Willcock.
Reds have the poorest goals-for record in the top ten clubs in the NPL West – with just 30 in their 18 games so far. Leaders Marine, who are seven [points clear have scored 39 and third-placed Warrington Rylands have netted 51.
Even Northwich, down in tenth, have scored 31 as Reds trail everyone in the top half of the table.
By contrast, Reds do have the equal best defensive record in the League – along with Marine they have conceded just 16.
A fit Allison would certainly have made a difference. Now in his ninth season with the club he has been a consistent scorer and, in fact, only two players have scored more goals for the club in the last 100 years.
