Carlisle residents are being given the chance to have their say on a new draft budget for Carlisle.

Carlisle residents are being given the chance to have their say on a new draft budget for Carlisle.

Carlisle City Council’s Executive Committee is consulting with local residents, businesses and organisations about the City Council draft budget for 2022/23.

The council has successfully achieved or identified over £9 million in transformational savings since 2010/11 and now says it “has a solid financial base” in order to set its 2022/23 budget.

There are no in-year savings required for 2022/23; although there is a continued savings requirement to be found by 2023/24 of £2.050 million.

Leader of Carlisle City Council, Cllr John Mallinson, said: “This balanced budget continues the focus on the priorities of the council: Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, St Cuthbert’s Garden Village and the Sands Centre Redevelopment. It is a sensible budget that puts this council in a good position as we move towards local government reorganisation in 2023.

“We have proposed a council tax freeze on our portion of the overall council tax bill as we want to do all we can to support our local residents during extremely challenging times.

Deputy leader backs budget

Deputy Leader of Carlisle City Council, Cllr Gareth Ellis, added: “The financial strategy, detailed in the budget proposal, will ensure that the council continues to set a robust budget. In addition to the council tax freeze, we’re also proposing to freeze car parking charges in our car parks for the first hour.”

“This budget proposal to council is the culmination of months of work through the budget process. This will be the last budget for Carlisle City Council, and I would like to thank all the officers and members who have contributed to this work.”

Comments will be considered as part of the ongoing budget process and will be assessed by the executive at their meeting on January 19. The final budget proposals will be discussed at a Carlisle City Council’s Full Council on February 1.

A copy of the draft executive budget is available to view at the Civic Centre’s Customer Contact Centre and is also available online by visiting http://www.carlisle.gov.uk/Council/Council-and-Democracy/Budget

Any comments can be emailed to communications@carlisle.gov.uk or write to: The Chief Executive, Carlisle City Council, Civic Centre, Carlisle, CA3 8QG by 9am on Monday, January 17.
