A thug who punched, kicked and stamped on a man’s head inside a Carlisle house has been jailed.
Mark Proudfoot, 29, went to the address where he drank and socialised with a male and female on December 6.
But after the conversation turned to domestic violence allegedly committed by the male against the female weeks earlier, Proudfoot launched what prosecutor Charles Brown told Carlisle Crown Court today (January 10) was a “prolonged” attack.
The victim remembered being “banged” against the front door by Proudfoot, who then stamped on his body, chest and head. The woman spoke of violence flaring even before that point, Proudfoot pulling the man from a sofa and throwing him to the floor before delivering repeated punches and kicks.
“She protested ‘he needs help, he is unconscious’,” said Mr Brown. “Mr Proudfoot responds ‘I will make him more unconscious’.” Proudfoot also warned the woman not to call police.
In an impact statement, the victim described the significant effect on him in the aftermath and described having headaches for a week afterwards. His injuries included a facial wound.
Proudfoot, previously of Stanhope Road, Carlisle, admitted actual bodily harm assault. He had pleaded guilty during a previous court hearing to two thefts after shoplifting at Tesco and Morrisons stores.
His lawyer spoke of the attack being an “ugly” incident during which he “massively overreacted”, seeking to “defend the honour” of the woman and remonstrate with the man. “It didn’t justify in any way the violence that followed,” said Mark Shepherd.
Recorder Anna Vigars QC heard Proudfoot had an “unenviable” criminal record, and jailed him for a total of 36 weeks. “The effect that you have had upon (the victim) has been to increase his anxiety and the stress that he feels,” said the judge.
