Workington 4, Newcastle Town 0
Dav Symington walked away with the match ball as he continues to take on his manager’s challenge of scoring 20 goals in the season.
His hat-trick against Newcastle took him to 12 so far and on course to deliver for Chris Willcock.
Symington’s goal spree contributed to a comfortable, controlled performance by the Reds as they seek to consolidate at the top of the table.
The League leaders were extending their unbeaten run to 11 games, while their closest rivals Warrington Rylands were losing at Kidsgrove.
“It’s the old cliché, we take one game at a time and concentrate on our own performance. We can’t do anything about other teams’ results.
“I challenged Dav to score 20 goals in the season because a player with his ability should be capable of that many,” said Reds boss Chris Willcock.
“He’s a bit special, with power in both right and left feet and is prepared to let them go from 30 yards.”
Symington had a hand in the first goal on 23 minutes. He steered a corner out to the late arriving Sam Smith and although his shot was wayward it fell to Symington again. His low ball into the six yard box was steered home by Ruben Jerome.
Then on 38 minutes he took the ball from a short corner on the left, cut across the 18 yard box before firing home into the bottom corner.
It could have been 3-0 before half-time but keeper Joseph Slinn made a fantastic one-handed save to deny Brad Carroll.
Two goals in the 55th and 56 minutes from Symington settled the game.
The first a wickedly dipping effort from the edge of the area and the second a well placed shot into the far corner.
Newcastle only had one shot on target, early in the second -half but it was straight at Jim Atkinson.
