Does this Whitehaven councillor prove who the real jameaters are?

Councillor Wammo in the jam aisle

A Whitehaven councillor – and a big fan of the town’s Rugby League club – has been forced to promote jam in Workington’s Morrisons store after losing a bet.

Carl Walmsley laid a bet with Workington councillor Sean Melton before the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy clash between Haven and Workington Town last week.

Because Whitehaven lost, Carl had to visit the store in his Haven top and stand in the jam aisle – because people of each town call the other ‘jameaters’.

There is much debate around which town is full of jameaters, with Workington saying it is definitely Whitehaven and vice versa.

It is thought to date back to the mining industry and implies people could not afford to buy meat for their sandwiches, so they had to eat jam instead.

Here’s what our colleagues from HOLLR have to say about it:

Meanwhile, Workington Morrisons’ community champion posted on Facebook: “If you’re in store please say hi to Councillor Wammo and tell him who the real jameaters are…..”
