
Detectives investigating an incident where a woman was grabbed from behind by a man in Carlisle city centre have charged a man with sexual assault.
Terry Lewis, 41, of Warwick Road, was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape after an alleged attack in the early hours of Sunday but has this morning been charged with sexual assault. He has been remanded in police custody prior to attending Carlisle’s magistrates’ court today.
Detective Sergeant Lee Brumpton said: “This is a serious offence and officers and detectives have acted swiftly in making an arrest. I’d like to thank those people who have come forward and assisted detectives with our enquiries.”
Detective Constable Anthony Wheatcroft added: “We continue to urge anyone who was in the vicinity and has information but has yet to make themselves known to come forward.”
