Workington extended their unbeaten run to 13 games although it was not one of their best performances in that sequence.
A goal in each half gave them their 12th win and Bootle, the only team to take a point in that run are their next opponents on Tuesday night.
Reds still lead by five points over Marine while none of the sides in behind the top two were able to win.
Mossley impressed with some decent football, particularly in the second half, but they failed to carry any serious threat against a solid Workington defence and keeper Jim Atkinson did not have a serious save to make.
The League leaders could have scored in the first minute but skipper Brad Carroll could not get enough on his shot when he stretched under pressure and it was straight at Dale Latham.
Mason Fawns, who was Mossley’s likeliest player to cause problems, hit one shot from the edge of the area which dipped just over the bar. Harry Pratt got on the end of a cross from Freddie Sass but his header was well wide.
Workington had to wait until the 4oth minute to take the lead. Their best passing move of the half ended with Brad Hubbold firing a ball across Latham and Ruben Jerome was there to steer home at the far post.
The decisive second goal didn’t come until the 78th minute when a corner was cleared but Sam Smith put in a good cross which beat the defenders and Ceiran Casson collected to fire across Latham into the bottom corner.
The one downside for Workington was a hamstring injury to Dav Symington which saw him leave the field 20 minutes from the end.
“It’s something we will have to assess in the next 48 hours but we will have Steven Rigg available on Tuesday for the Bootle game,” said manager Chris Willcock.
The west Cumbrians don’t have a game next Saturday and after the trip to Bootle aren’t back in action until Saturday, February 19 when they visit Ramsbottom.
