Copeland Council is hosting a series of events to promote mutual understanding between cultures.

The 12 sessions are for women from a range of backgrounds, cultures and countries.

The aim is to improve their well-being and confidence, and help those new to Copeland to settle in.

Activities will include dance, art, fitness, craft and cookery.

Copeland’s portfolio holder for social inclusion, Coun Andy Pratt, said: “These sessions are for women of all cultures and they are an opportunity for integration, friendship and the sharing of cultures.

“We will have translators available, and transport, so that there are no barriers to attending. Some of our attendees have helped us put together a programme of activities that can be enjoyed by a multicultural group of women.

“We hope that by the end of the programme participants will feel welcomed to the area, will have made friends and will feel ready to take the next step in their journey by becoming further involved in their communities.”

Shayla Johnston, of Groundwork, who will be delivering some of the cookery sessions. She said:  We are really looking forward to cooking and sharing lots of different foods from different countries. Sharing food is a great way to get to know other people and to learn from one another.”

The sessions begin on March 2 and will be hosted at St Bees School.

The council has organised the sessions in its role as part of the Copeland Multi Cultural Steering Group.
