A charity says that thousands of people are in limbo as they await their dementia diagnosis.
Alzheimer’s Society is responding to new data released yesterday by The Sunday Telegraph which reveals a backlog in dementia diagnosis and long waits of up a year in some areas. The figures revealed were in a response to a Freedom of Information request to NHS trusts in England.
Tara Edwards, Area Manager for Alzheimer’s Society in Lancashire and Cumbria said: “We’re deeply concerned that thousands of people who have bravely taken the important first step to see their GP are now in limbo, waiting up to a year, in some areas, for their definitive dementia diagnosis. Not knowing whether you have dementia can be an extremely anxious time, leaving people unable to access vital support and treatment, and feeling like they can’t move on with their lives.
“We know the NHS is under huge pressures and Alzheimer’s Society is calling on UK Government to provide a clear recovery plan with investment of at least £70m, to support NHS trusts to reduce diagnosis backlogs across the country.
“NHS England must carry out its own audit of memory services to understand what regions are worst hit and where help is needed most, to improve the lives of people desperately waiting. Trusts with large backlogs must ensure people can access appropriate care and support for their condition while waiting for an assessment.
“It’s so important that anyone concerned about dementia seeks help straight away, whether that’s seeking advice from Alzheimer’s Society’s support line on 0333 150 3456 or an appointment with their GP.
“A dementia diagnosis is essential to getting vital health treatment as well as emotional and practical support – and the earlier you get these, the more effective they are. Early diagnosis is vital and will be the focus of this year’s Dementia Action Week, May 16-22.”
