Carlisle Crown Court

A Carlisle man caught with £2,000 worth of cocaine in his car after police saw him travelling at over 90mph on the A69 will be sentenced by a judge next month.

Lewis Tarrant, 27, appeared in the dock at the city magistrates’ court earlier today. During a short hearing, Tarrant, of Henderson Road, Currock, admitted possessing class A drug cocaine with intent to supply it to others.

Prosecutor Peter Kelly told the court that the offence came to light on July 1 last year.

“The defendant was seen by police officers. They were in an unmarked vehicle. He was seen to be travelling what they considered to be quickly — just over 90mph.”

Tarrant’s vehicle was stopped by police and there was also a young relative inside.

“It became apparent there was some evidence of drug use within the car itself. He is spoken to by officers.”

Two balls of cocaine were found “secreted about his person”. The estimated street value of the drug haul was just over £2,000, and £400 cash was also located.

His mobile phone had been examined and, said the prosecutor, “was indicative of somebody effectively street dealing, the Crown would say.”

Tarrant’s case was adjourned by District Judge John Temperley, who heard the starting point for sentencing was in the region of four years.

Tarrant is due to be sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court on May 9 and was granted unconditional bail in the meantime.
