The A595 was closed following a serious crash at Waberthwaite.
Emergency services were called to the scene last night, April 8, at around 8.30pm, and police said the road is likely to be closed for some time.
Diversions were being put in place, but may not be suitable for large vehicles.
Motorists were asked to avoid the area. The road has reopened.
