The countdown begins for the 2022 Uppies and Downies series, which starts on Good Friday.
This Workington tradition dates back hundreds of years and sees two teams – the Uppies and the Downies – try to get a ball to their end of town.
The balls are made by Mark Rawlinson and this year, they are extra special as they mark the Queen’s platinum jubilee.

Over the years, the game has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charities and this year is backing the Fire Fighters’ Charity.
We’ve put together a selection of photos from games since 2014 and we’ll be covering the games as they happen too – please join us for our coverage and join in online if you can’t make the games! We’ll be here from 6pm each game night.
What is Uppies and Downies?
There are no rules.
The ball is thrown off at The Cloffocks on the concrete bridge near Allerdale House at 6.30pm on Good Friday, Easter Tuesday and Saturday, April 23.
The winner has to get the ball to Workington Hall if they are an Uppie or the Port of Workington if they are a Downie and hail the ball, by throwing it up in the air three times. The hailer’s prize is the ball.
