A Cumbrian MP is calling for the Prime Minister and Chancellor to resign after it emerged that they will be fined for attending lockdown-breaking parties.
A statement issued earlier today by a No 10 spokesperson said: “The Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer have today received notification that the Metropolitan Police intend to issue them with fixed penalty notices.”
It follows confirmation from the Metropolitan Police that they have issued more than 50 fixed penalty notices after a series of parties inside Downing Street during coronavirus restrictions.
It calls into questions comments made by the Prime Minister to MPs in December.
He told the House of Commons: “I repeat that I have been repeatedly assured since these allegations emerged that there was no party and that no Covid rules were broken.”
Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, Tim Farron, said: “I have just been speaking with a group of local elderly people who spent long lonely months isolated during lockdown. They made huge sacrifices to do the right thing.
“The PM and Chancellor thought they were above those people and above the law – of course, they must resign.”
A former Penrith Conservative MP says the Prime Minister “must go” over Partygate.
