Although they lost 1-0 at Walsall, Carlisle United are only three points short of certain survival.
They remain 10 points clear of Oldham, who dropped into the second relegation place after a 2-0 home defeat by Northampton.
Scunthorpe were confirmed as dropping to the National League after a 4-0 defeat by Leyton Orient, ending 72 years in the Football League.
Ironically the narrow win for Walsall confirmed them as being mathematically safe from the drop after they had suffered three straight defeats.
For Carlisle it left them without a win in their last four games, which includes three defeats. Fortunately prior to that the new manager bounce under Paul Simpson had been ultra effective and had carried them away from a relegation place.
The only goal came in first-half stoppage time after Mark Howard had done remarkably well to keep out his own player Dynel Simeu after he had turned the ball towards his net. But unfortunately the parried save set-up Jack Earing whose deflected shot beat the Carlisle keeper.
It was a pretty low-key game, and had few opportunities in the second-half, although Simeu was closest with a header just past the post.
