Two more players agree new deal with Workington Reds

Scott Allison (Ben Challis)

Workington Reds record goal-scorer Scott Allison has agreed a new deal for the 2022/23 season.

The popular striker is keen to get going again after an injury disrupted campaign, mainly down to an old shoulder problem.

He said today: “Staying at Workington is a no brainer for me. The club stuck by me last season through all the injuries and I feel I owe them for that.

“This club has been great to me and I feel that leaving it before getting promotion out of this League just isn’t an option.”

Manager Danny Grainger said: “I’m delighted to have Scotty here for another season. He is a big player for us and after a disappointing season with injuries I’m sure he will be hungrier than ever to start as many games as possible and do what he does best – score goals.”

It was during Grainger’s first spell in charge in September 2019 that Allison became the third player in the modern era – and sixth in the club’s history – to reach 100 clubs.

Since then he has continued to score goals, despite two voided seasons through covid and his own shoulder problems.

When he scored Reds opening goal against Marine in the NPL West play-off semi-final it took him to 130 for the club. Only two men have scored more, both back in the dim and distant past from the 1930’s – Jack Thom and Billy Charlton.

And in more good news, a third loyal clubman agreed to re-sign for the next season.

Danny Grainger got the best out of Dan Wordsworth when he was in charge last time and now the 31-year-old defender wants to go round again for an 11th season at the club.

Known as Goose to fans and team-mates, he said: “As soon as I heard Danny was back I knew I wanted to sign for another season.

“I’m looking forward to getting into pre-season and hopefully getting that promotion the staff/team deserve.”

Grainger added: “To have not just players but people like Goose committed to the club and the team is a huge boost to everyone involved.

“He has great leadership qualities and is a passionate player who is desperate to win and those are the type of players we need this season and I’m over the moon to be able to get Goose on board again.”

Reds have also completed the re-signing of Conor Tinnion in the last 24 hours.
