College boss gets on his bike for charity

The principal of a West Cumbrian college will cycle nearly 1,000 miles in a major test of his skills in the saddle.

Chris Nattress , of Lakes College at Lillyhall, is set to ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats over the next week, to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The challenge begins on Sunday and is expected to take Chris nine days.

Chris said: “Riding from Land’s End to John O’Groats is a major challenge, even for seasoned cyclists, and one I’ve had to train hard for.

“What better way to raise plenty of money for a charity which has had a profound impact on so many families – including many in our community in west Cumbria.”

Accompanied by a friend and a support vehicle, Chris hopes to deliver a running video blog on the college’s social media channels recording his journey, which will average more than 100 miles each day.

While he has trained, doing up to 70 miles a day on weekends, Chris admitted it was difficult to fully prepare for what will be a gruelling jaunt through the English and Scottish countryside.

Chris added: “I’m also hoping that seeing me take this on will inspire people to think that, if I can do it, they could too.

“Cycling is a passion of mine so, although it will be tough, I’m sure I’ll enjoy seeing more of our glorious countryside from the saddle of my bike.”

Staff at the college will also be getting behind Chris by aiming to match his miles in the ActivZone gym on the campus by cycling, rowing or running on the machines.
