Former pub set to be demolished to make way for petrol station in Frizington

The Griffin, which is now empty, is set to be demolished to make way for a petrol station

A former Frizington pub is set to be demolished to make way for the expansion of the neighbouring Spar.

An application has been submitted to Copeland Borough Council  which could see the demolition of The Griffin Inn on Main Street to make way for the extension of the neighbouring Spar store, which is also a Post Office.

Richardson and Sons Limited want to build a petrol filling station, single-storey extension and create additional car parking on the site

The applicant said the work would solve access issues at the site.

The Design and Access Statement said: “There is some existing and informal customer car parking shared on the site. There are no marked bays but there are approximately 10 spaces.

“The nature of the parking arrangement means that cars park in an ad hoc arrangement and often block access for delivery vehicles that require access to the rear of the store.”

If approved, the applicant believes the changes will make the site more manageable for deliveries.

“The existing access point off Main Street will be widened to allow for an improved accessibility for HGV and other delivery vehicles. The swept path analysis shows that the HGVs will be able to enter and leave the site in a forward gear and will have improved access to the rear of the store for deliveries.”

The agent said that redevelopment of the existing store would ensure it remained a vital asset to the village.

Richardson and Sons Ltd said it did not expect the new filling station to create an increase in traffic.

It added: “The traffic that is likely to be generated by the proposal has been established and the majority will be traffic that is already travelling on the local road network or visiting the existing store on the site.”
