A Cumbrian MP has been facing questions from children at a local primary school.

Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Penrith and The Border, visited Shap Church of England Primary School to see what the Eden youngsters have been getting up to and to explain his role as an MP.

The school invited Dr Hudson following a Zoom meeting with pupils during the pandemic when pupils expressed concern about PPE pollution.

Given a tour by some of the older school councillors, Dr Hudson was then quizzed by Key Stage Two children.

Questions touched on subjects ranging from the cost of living crisis and the war in Ukraine to climate change and racism.

Neil said: “Thank you to the students and staff of Shap C of E Primary school who gave me an insight into all the wonderful things they’ve been getting up to.

“I was really impressed by how knowledgeable the children were on the big issues affecting society today. Their understanding is a testament to all the great work being done at the school.

“It was a real joy to meet everyone and I hope to see them all soon.”

A spokesperson for the school said: “It was wonderful for our children to meet our MP face to face, following the Zoom meeting we had during the pandemic, when our children expressed their concern about PPE pollution.

“Neil was wonderful with our children and answered all of our children thoroughly. His background as a vet was of great interest to the children, they were also interested in his favourite sport (cricket) and which football team he supported (Newcastle!).”
