An annual charity pigeon racing event has returned to Whitehaven.
After a two year hiatus, the race hosted by the Cumbria Region Royal Pigeon Racing Association and Memory Matters UK took place in the harbour as part of Dementia Action Week.
The event was set up by Memory Matters UK in order to raise money and awareness for Dementia Action Week.
Eight pigeons set off from Whitehaven Harbour to return to their lofts.
Those who attended the event got the chance to hold the pigeons and take part in a free sweepstake for the pigeon race, with prizes such as chocolates and biscuits provided for by the RPRA. The Age UK bus was also present and spent the day giving out advice to individuals, especially those experiencing financial hardship.
Les Blackloc, president of the RPRA, attended the event as the charity holds a special place in his heart due to his past experience working for the NHS alongside Memory Matters UK.
He said: “We haven’t been able to hold this important event for the past two years so it was really special to get back out there and raise awareness for Dementia Action Week.
“The race took place on a lovely spring day and we had an amazing turnout. I would like to give a special thank you to my ex-colleague, Sheena, who helped to pull this event together. We are so proud to be able to be a part of such an amazing event.”
