As the final game has been completed in the Workington and District Sunday League the secretary wonders if his stint might be over.
Ron Caffrey has been secretary for eight years and for the last two seasons has been looking to stand down.
Now aged 73, and a former goalkeeper when the League was in its infancy, and later a referee in the competition, Ron is continuing to hope there’s a budding replacement out there.
He told Cumbria Crack: “It’s not that I don’t enjoy the role or can’t manage it, but I do feel it’s time that we had some younger blood running the League and coming-up with new initiatives.
“Our AGM is on Monday, July 4 in the Tony Hopper Bar, Borough Park, and I’m hoping that there will be someone prepared to take it on.
“I’m also hoping that there will be some new teams wanting to join because we have lost a few in recent years and the two Divisions are very sparse.
“I did have an initial enquiry a fortnight ago but there’s been no follow-up and I hope there might still be a development at Abbeytown who seemed close to applying last year.
“If anyone wants to raise a subject at the AGM they should get it to me by e-mail before the end of June.
“On a personal note, in the hope that someone might come along to take on the role as secretary I’d just like to thank everyone who has helped make the job easier over the last 12 months.
“It’s a long list as well, from the club secretaries, players, referees who are involved week-in and week-out to the Sunday League committee who give such valuable support.
“A special mention too to chairperson Richard Manchester who took over from Ian Blair last November.
“Then a mention with thanks to Rebecca Stamper of Allerdale council and Stewart Henderson at Groundwork; along with Ben, Craig, Ray and Dan at the Cumberland FA.
“Not to be forgotten are the partners of the players each Sunday who allow them to play and finally, but certainly not least, my wife Jean who has supported me from the first day we met to be involved in local grass roots football.”
The last League game of the season was played in mid-week when Sun Inn, already confirmed as runners-up in the Premier Division, beat Deer Orchard 7-4.
There were two hat-tricks for Sun Inn from Will Hodgson and Mally Graham with John Hayes supplying the seventh goal.
For Deer Orchard there were goals from Kyran Bertram, Rob Cox, Callum West and Ryan Gormley.
