Plans have been revealed to demolish a former West Cumbrian hotel after it failed to sell.
The Grove Court Hotel in Cleator stopped trading after a kitchen fire in August 2019, which caused extensive smoke damage. Ten months before the fire, it was on the market for £900,000 but that was reduced in May 2019 to £650,000.
It remained for sale until November 2020 when an offer was made, but later withdrawn.
Now an application has been lodged with Copeland council to knock down the main building to allow the site to be redeveloped.
Existing bungalows and a two-storey building would remain if permission was granted.
The agent for the proposal believed that demolition to facilitate the site being redeveloped was the best course of action.
They said: “The redundant building will continue to deteriorate and after three years of marketing no sale as been achieved. The proposed demolition work and future redevelopment would overall result in a positive impact on the site and the area and on a brownfield site.”
A previous planning application was approved to redevelop the hotel into 13 supported living accommodation units but the plans fell through following further cost appraisals.
