
Two Cumbrians will be extending their cricket experiences by playing in Australia during the winter.
Katandra, in Victoria State, have recruited James Dawson and James Lythgoe for the 2022/23 season.
Described as a small, family-orientated country club, Katandra have enjoyed six successful years and the Cumbrians are joining a club on the up.
Dawson, 23, is a member of the Carlisle side which is currently top of the Cumbria League’s Premier Division.
He came through the youth ranks at the club and has racked-up over 170 games for them, scoring over 2,500 with an average in the mid-20s.
In 2021 he scored 528 runs (average 29.89) and included in his total was a second century for the club.
So far this season in 17 innings he has scored 267 runs with a top score of 58 and an average of 19.07.
Lythgoe, 24, started as a youngster with Great Corby before three seasons at Lanercost.
An all-rounder he played for Carlisle from 2016 to 2020 and last year with Alsager.
This season he’s moved into the Debyshire and Cheshire League where he has scored 333 runs (avge 25,62) and ten wickets at 23.40.
He has a top score for Old Glossop of 91 which was made off 90 deliveries and included seven sixes.
Last season at Alsager he scored 447 runs at 26.29 and took 29 wickets at 19.55.
Carlisle secretary Mark Davidson said: “We’re delighted at the Carlisle club for both lads that they have secured a winter Down Under.
“It will be an amazing experience for both of them and we wish them well on their travels at the end of the English season.”
Current Carlisle players Michael Slack, Marc Brown and Nico Watt have all spent time in Australia during the winter playing club cricket.
So too have a couple from Wigton in Johnny Honeyman and Mikey Hill, and also Matthew Siddall and Alex Grainger at Cockermouth.
