
Whitehaven Miners top the first league table of the season in the Cumberland County League Premier Division.
The new season kicked off on Saturday when Miners enjoyed an 8-3 win at Gosforth.
Ryan Doran and Owen Woods both hit hat-tricks for newly promoted Miners and last season’s top scorer in Division One, Lewis Park, scored two.
Kieran Tomlinson, Ryan Gray and Jack Denwood replied for Gosforth.
UniSun Athletic came out on top against Cockermouth in an end-to-end game that finished 4-3.
Cockermouth took the lead through Macauley Sharp but Shane Dorward levelled and the teams went in at half-time locked at 1-1.
In the second half UniSun wasted several chances before they took the lead through Josh Morley.
Cockermouth hit back through Mark Campbell but were level for just eight minutes as Kian Makar beat four men before slotting the ball into the bottom corner to make it 3-2 to UniSun.
Cockermouth equalised within a minute, Dan Dobson poking home from close range after good work down the left.
UniSun sealed all three points with 15 minutes to go when Dave Nelson slid in at the far post to convert Shane Dorward’s cross.
In the other Premier Division game a single Ryan Hanley goal was enough to give Wigton the points against Maryport.
In Division One Bransty broke a few records when they beat Silloth 22-0.
Spike Canavan and Adam Smith both scored five each; Jamie Thursby got four and there was a hat trick for Brad O’Pray.
Josh Fisher, Mark Callan and Brad Dryden added their names to the score sheet and there were two own goal.
It was a tough start to the season for a very young Silloth side with Bransty showing their credentials as one of the favourites for promotion.
There was a big win for visitors Cleator Moor Celtic Reserves at Whitehaven Miners Reserves as they ran out 7-0 winners.
Lucas Cragie scored a hat-trick with Owen Charlton bagging a brace. Luke Dunn and Rhys Little added the others.
Carlisle City Development joined Bransty and Celtic on maximum points after a 2-0 win at home to Whitehaven Amateurs Development. Kev McKenna and Jonny Haughan scored the goals.
The County League takes a break this coming week-end because of the Bank Holiday and will return on September 3rd when Aspatria start their season away to UniSun and Wigton host Cockermouth.
In Division 1 Windscale play Cleator Moor; Carlisle City travel to Whitehaven Miners and Whitehaven host Bransty.
