Workington retained the Higson Cup at Whitehaven when they beat Wigton by 61 runs.
Wigton, playing in their first Cumbria League final had won the toss and elected to field against a Workington side which had been dismissed for only 63 the previous day.
The holders were not as brittle on this occasion, however, and were bowled out in the final over for 157.
Although opener Jake Daniels was run-out by Matthew Hodgson for three, club chairman Kristian Moffat and Adam Chambers put on 42 for the second wicket – which proved to be the highest stand of the game.
Like his opening partner Chambers was run out (by John Reed) for 25 but when Moffat was clean bowled for 50 by Glen Liddle, Workington had moved on to 123-5.
Skipper Matthew Lowden made 18 in the middle order but Workington weren’t helped by two more run outs and closed on 157 off the third ball of the final over.
Wigton professional Chris Hodgson took 2-23 and Liddle had 2-33.
Needing a solid start at the top of the order Wigton slipped to 11-3 with Lowden grabbing two of the wickets for his side.
On their day Workington have one of the best and varied bowling attacks in the League and they served the team well on this occasion.
Only Chris Hodgson stood defiant for his side, the only batsman to reach double figures.
Coming in at 11-2 he made 32 off 71 deliveries and when he went Wigton were 80-7 and very much up against it.
The tail managed 16 more runs and when Liddle was run out by Moffat the Higson Cup was on its way back to the Valentine Ground.
David Pearce was the most successful Workington bowler, taking 4-16 from nine overs while Lowden (2-11), professional Lahiru Dilshan (2-20) and Ben Scott (1-18) chipped in.
