A hospitality business is set to expand, capitalising on the surge in staycations, if plans for a further 20 static caravans are approved.
Allerdale council has received an application to site 20 more static caravans at North Lakes Country Park, Tarnside, between Silloth and Aspatria.
The caravans would be along the shoreline of Dub Tarn, an extension of a well established business which currently provides pitches for caravans and holiday lodges.
In supporting statements, agent Barrs and Co Leisure Consultants said: “In view of the continued global uncertainty, particularly around travel and following in the wake of COVID-19 the UK has seen an increase staycation holidays.
“The applicant has found that there is high demand from customers who want their own secure holiday accommodation. This application is made in response to that demand by providing additional spacious pitches for holiday static caravans.”
North Lakes Country Park is investing in the site and supporting its continued growth, the agent added.
Barrs and Co said: “As with many caravan parks the site has been developed gradually over many years in a traditional manner and is now well established within the local landscape. The park is a successful and viable business and the applicant is investing in the business and modernising the park to meet modern customer standards.”
It said the expansion would not have any negative impacts on the community.
The development would have no impact on the boundary of the park as it is not visible from outside of the park and some landscaping will take place to create a slope to Dub Tarn.
“The proposal does not require a new access to the public highway. It is noted that previous planning applications addressed the issue of the access to the caravan park and an improved entrance with appropriate visibility splays is now in place,” it added.
Pitching the Value, a report about the economic benefits of the holiday park industry, is cited in the application. It reveals that the total amount of visitor expenditure created on-site and off-site every year per privately owned holiday home is just below £14,000.
