Windscale shaded a Monkwearmouth Cup first round tie with Wolvison at the Falcon Complex to make the second round draw.
Wolviston were hoping to reverse the result of the Wearside League game on the first day of the season which the Atoms narrowly won 2-1 but it was a repeat score-line.
Windscale started the game in the ascendancy but failed to take advantage with poor use of the ball but it developed into a proper blood and thunder Cup-tie.
The first significant action of the game involved Windscale keeper Ian Studholme. A strike from Wolviston’s Chris Stockton was arrowing its way into the corner of the net when Studholme stretched every sinew to get a fingertip to the ball successfully diverting it onto the post and subsequently being hacked away to safety.
The Atoms recent injury woes increased half way through the first period when Kieran Fraser had to leave the field, but his replacement Lewis Selkirk was to play a significant part in the eventual outcome.
In the 36th minute, Ben Graham worked his way down the right and delivered a tempting ball across the face of goal towards Selkirk waiting to convert it into the net. Wolviston’s Joe Joyce, trying desperately to prevent the score, only succeeded in directing it beyond Ben Fairless his keeper, to give Windscale the lead.
Selkirk was active again five minutes later when the goal margin was increased. Reece Fretwell threaded a pass into the Wolviston penalty area and following a series of passes between Graham and Selkirk, the latter slotted the ball home to give Windscale what looked like a comfortable lead at the break.
The start of the second period became fractious, both teams rightly having players cautioned by the referee.
The arrears were reduced approaching the hour mark with Wolviston’s man of the match Chris Stockton providing the goal.
Windscale lost possession in the opposition half when the ball was transferred quickly up field to Stockton who fired his shot beyond Studholme.
There was more drama to follow in the 72nd minute when Wolviston were awarded a penalty kick following a rash tackle in the box by Dan Morgan.
It was Stockton again taking responsibility for the spot kick. Despite striking the ball firmly, Studholme was again the Atom’s saviour, flinging himself across goal to push the ball away.
Several chances were created by both teams in the final 15 minutes with neither side able to convert these into goals.
