Barrow Raiders coach Paul Crarey considers it an honour to be back coaching a Cumbria side again.
He was in charge when the county figured in memorable games over a decade ago.
They beat Tonga 28-16 at Workington in 2006; hammered the USA 70-0 at Barrow in 2007; drew 18-18 with an England side in 2010 at Whitehaven before losing 26-12 to England Knights again at Whitehaven in 2011.
“There were some memorable games for the county and it’s great that the committee has been formed to reintroduce county rugby.
“We are looking forward to the game next month against Jamaica and will be sitting down to look at what players will be available to us.
“I remember introducing Kyle Amor and Brad Singleton to the Cumbria county side and they have gone on to be Super League stars.
“We will see which Cumbrian players at Super League level are available, but the bulk will come from our three professional sides.
“There will be a selection group within the committee who will make the decisions and I am sure we are going to come up with a very good squad to test the Jamaicans.
“It is just so good to get a game again for a Cumbria county side and we are looking forward to more in the future.”
Originally the game was going to be played against Samoa at Barrow but the Islanders were forced to pull out.
Jamaica wanted a game so were duly invited to play at Workington’s Derwent Park, which has now been confirmed for Friday, October 7.
In view of Town’s current financial difficulties the bar and catering sales will be well received after their club season has finished.
Crarey will head up a coaching team of his Barrow assistant Steve Rae and the Whitehaven coach Jonty Gorley.
