Waste collection disruption in South Lakes

Residents in Kendal, some parts of Furness and Windermere, will have to wait for their green bins to be emptied this week.

South Lakeland District Council said it had to cancel some collections on Saturday due to limited staff availability and the need to prioritise grey bin and recycling collections.

Collections have been carried out a day later than normal due to the bank holiday on Monday because of the Queen’s state funeral.

Householders in Kendal, parts of rural Furness and the Storrs area of Windermere who would usually have had their green bins collected on Friday will miss out on the catch-up round on Saturday.

Councillor Eamonn Hennessy, SLDC portfolio holder for customer and locality services, said: “The council apologises to those residents who will be affected by this Saturday’s cancellation of some green bin rounds. I know that many people will be disappointed at not having their garden waste collected at a time of year when there is still plenty to do in the garden.

“However, due to the short notice of the bank holiday announcement, we do not have a full complement of crew to work this Saturday. This means we will be using all available depot staff to prioritise grey bin/recycling collections, and I would like to thank all those colleagues who will be working on Saturday to help us catch up.”

People living in one of the locations below who normally have green bins collected this Friday are asked to leave it out on the next scheduled collection date – but, the council said, blue recycling bags/boxes can be left out for collection this Saturday.
