Maryport Social snatched the headlines in the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League this week.
The Division Two side defeated previously unbeaten Division One outfit Workington’s United Club, 3-2.
The match started in dramatic fashion as Ben Scott took the lead with a respotted black to put the Social side 1-0 up.
Frame two saw United’s Clive Lister make a break of 33 but with some determined play it was Gary Miller who took the game to put Maryport 2-0 in the lead.
Peter O’Hagan steadied the ship for the United Club in frame three with a convincing victory and with team-mate and captain, Andrew Mitchelhill taking the next in almost identical fashion a decider was required to separate the two sides.
The final frame proved to be a high- scoring contest but as there was little to separate the two players throughout, a second re-spotted black of the match was needed to determine a winner.
As the black was played it was Andrew Scott who was to take his opportunity and with a solid pot it was the Maryport man who dragged his team over the line for a superb match victory.
Up next in an all-Division Two battle Whitehaven’s Rack Shack continued to show improvement as not only did they manage to shock a strong Station Road side 4-1, but they also achieved it away from home.
Peter McAvoy started the ball rolling as he took a low-scoring first and with Stephen Harrison taking the second in a similar manner the Whitehaven outfit went 2-0 up.
The third saw Adam Morella win a black ball game for 3-0 and as Andy Moore won the next, a whitewash looked on the cards at 4-0.
However with the point a frame league format the last frame still offered something for the Workington side to play for.
Showing tremendous grit Darren Lawson was determined to ensure his side returned a point and with a solid display he did just that to ultimately ease the Station Road pain.
Flimby Social white-washed fellow Division Two opponents, Workington Golf Club B, 5-0 in a contest that yet again went the way of the away side.
Michael Walker, Richard Kirkham and Geoff Banton took the first three frames with little trouble to put Flimby 3-0 up and as Kevin Kirkham constructed a break of 34 in the next is was enough to move the Social side to 4-0.
In the final frame of the fixture Sal Cakmak was in no mood for charity and with a equally convincing victory the Flimby man completed the drubbing in fine style.
Finally, Division One champions Workington Conservative Club ground out a 3-2 home victory against fellow top tier opponents, Workington Golf Club in a match that was every bit as close as the match score suggested.
In the first Cons’ Richard McCarthy won a close frame for 1-0 and with yet another black ball game, Julian Plaza took the next to extend the lead to 2-0.
A break of 36 was enough for Ryan Ismay to pull one back for the golf club but with Dave Holland winning a low scoring fourth a Cons match win was guaranteed at 3-1.
Nevertheless the momentum ended up finishing in the golf club’s favour as Mark Cowen took the remaining point to finish the match with a fitting 3-2 score-line.
