Workington recovered well from Tuesday’s defeat at Macclesfield to earn an impressive 3-0 win at Glossop.
It was a thoroughly professional performance from Danny Grainger’s men who were in control for much of the game.
Glossop, enjoying an improved season and fresh from a good mid-week win, had a couple of early half chances before Reds stamped their authority on the game.
Then there was a good save for Jim Atkinson to make early in the second-half before Reds took control.
The fact that Glossop’s 18-year-old goalkeeper Louis Hood, a debutant on loan from Accrington, was the man of the match tells its own tale.
He actually had a quick reception to the NPL West when Dav Symington whipped in a fierce low drive which he did well to block with his legs.
But then two half chances for Glossop served as a warning for Reds that the hosts could pose a threat.
A long run from the pacey Jacques Etia ended with a low cross which Matty Gillam was only inches away from sliding in at the far post.
Then the diminutive Etia just couldn’t reach a deep cross played to the far post.
But those early warnings were taken on board by the Reds and they started to dominate the game.
The opening goal came on 25 minutes after Keelan Leslie made a good run down the left and then produced a curling cross which saw Bobby Carroll, smallest man in the box, rise well and he placed a smart header beyond Hood into the far corner.
It could have been more before half time. Symington’s run and low cross was met by Scott Allison but his shot was well blocked by Hood.
Then another close range effort from Allison was also charged down by a defender when it was destined for the back of the net.
Jim Atkinson’s one real save of the game came early in the second-half when Sehuba Senogo let one go from 30 yards and the Reds keeper had go full length to turn round the post.
Symington had one shot on the run deflected to safety by the outstretched leg of Hood but the young keeper could do nothing about the second goal on the hour.
It was a Symington special from 30 yards, struck over the wall and beyond the sprawling keeper.
Reds were full in control and scored their third goal five minutes from time.
Glossop had been pressing but a long clearance found Stephen Rigg and home centre-half Lee Wilshaw the only two players in the Glossop half apart from Hood.
Rigg got there first, held off Wilshaw and then fired a strong shot on the run which Hood got a hand to but could not prevent from ending up in the net.
There were several top performances in a commanding team display but honourable mentions for Carroll and young Niall Moran, who was a capable deputy for the injured Sam Smith, alongside Dan Wordsworth at the back.
