An award-winning surfing documentary is set to be screened at a popular Kendal arts venue this month.
Brewery Arts will be hosting the event on November 24 which will be followed by an exclusive Zoom question and answer session with director Minna Dufton.
Her debut feature documentary Big vs Small explores the story of big wave surfer Joana Andrade, the ‘tiny fighter’ who has a deep fear of drowning. She travels to Heinola, Finland, to train in holding her breath under ice with free diver Johanna Nordblad.
The two athletes are then followed as they embark on unusual training sessions and bring their talents together.
Dufton was inspired to create the documentary when she came across a BBC news article about women who surf the biggest waves in America, who were also fighting for equality.
She told the Finnish Institute: “Female empowerment has inspired me before and I knew I wanted to make another film about a woman who did something pretty extraordinary.”
The film is described as a ‘modern-day fairytale’ and has won several awards including best film at Surf At Lisbon in 2020.
