L&L Property Contractors Snooker League fixtures weren’t played last week.
Instead cup action, featuring the Derwent Valley Asbestos Removal and Demolition sponsored Eric McMullen Memorial TKO Handicap Trophy, took centre stage.
Workington Golf Club A produced yet another fantastic cup performance in beating Whitehaven’s Rack Shack 4-1.
With three wins out of three the home side guaranteed their passage through to the March 1 semi finals.
Phil Sorfleet (+19 handicap) made short work of the first frame for 1-0 and with team mate Stephen Jackson (+38) carrying on in a similar fashion in the next the golfers were 2-0 to the good.
Even though Ryan Ismay (+11) was giving away a substantial start in frame three a thumping victory extended the Golf Club A lead to an unassailable 3-0 advantage.
Bryan Walker (+21) ensured the golfers reached 4-0 with a victory in the next but it was Andy Moore (+37) who saved the Rack Shack’s blushes with a superb win in the last to end the match at 4-1.
In the same group as the Golf Club A side, Workington’s Station Road Club made it two wins out of two with a 4-1 home victory over Maryport Social Club to leave them probably needing another win from their remaining two games to qualify.
The first frame went to Station Road Club with a win for Tom Thompson (+23) but as Andrew Sharp (+32) proved victorious on the black for the Social side in the next parity was achieved at 1-1.
Chris Hunter (+32) won a convincing third frame to put Station Road in the lead again at 2-1 and adding to that with a brilliant 35 clearance it was Mike Walker (+20) who snatched frame four to ensure Station Road took the match victory at 3-1.
The final frame of the match looked to be going in the direction of the away side on the back of a 42 point lead with just one red remaining.
Nevertheless two snookers and a few outstanding pots later it was Darren Lawson (+29) who took the frame on the black to finish the match 4-1 to the delight of his team mates.
Finally, the only match in group 2 gave Workington Veterans Club some hope of qualifying as they defeated Flimby Social Club 3-2 at home.
Mark Tunstall (+18) held his nerve on the final black to grab the first frame for the Vets Club but in coming from behind it was Flimby’s Paul Vickers (+21) who levelled the match at 1-1 with some solid potting.
A week’s highest break of 42 allowed Sal Cakmak (+23) to put Flimby ahead at 2-1.
However back came the Vets Club as they tied the match at 2-2. A deciding frame defeat would have put the Vets team out of the competition but in producing a 30 break from what looked like an impossible position Kevin Basnett (Scr) delivered an impressive win to ensure his side still have a chance of qualifying for the semis with one match remaining.
