An unsung hero of Gosforth has been presented with an award for the efforts he puts into his community.
Anthony Millard – and a network of volunteers – look after the village’s playing field, keeping it pristine for the numerous activities which take place there.
The playing field has expanded due to his efforts and now offers a games area as well as a playground for younger children. There are a range of active sports clubs and over the years, rugby, cricket and football have all shared the use of the green area.
High Sheriff Alan McViety presented him with the Shield for Community Volunteer at a presentation this week.
Claire Gallery-Strong, of the Gosforth Playing Field committee, described Anthony as an unsung hero.
She said: “People like Anthony don’t seek recognition or thanks. He doesn’t do it for a high profile. He does this for one reason, community.
“We are delighted to see him recognised and to be able to take a chance to celebrate his many years of effort together with our community.”
Gosforth parish councillor Rachel Unsworth added: “Anthony is an inspiration for volunteering. Managing our community assets costs taxpayers money. Volunteering is a significant contribution to help keep our amenities affordable.”
Anthony said: “I am absolutely delighted. Many hours of work have gone into the community and to be given an award to recognise that is amazing. I never expected it and am enjoying the moment. I get lots of pleasure from seeing people use the playing field and seeing my own grandchildren play there as well.”
Trudy Harrison,Copeland MP, joined the celebrations and said: “People like Anthony are the glue that brings community together. His sheer commitment and service in Gosforth is highly commendable and the recognition is richly deserved.”
Joe Murray, chair of Cumbria Neighbourhood Watch, said: Anthony’s commitment to the Gosforth community demonstrates exactly what the award represents. An unsung hero whose commitment, on a voluntary basis, his time and energy to ensure that the community facilities and the local area are well maintained is a credit to himself and his community.”
