Swan rescue at Workington nature reserve

A young swan who had got into difficulty at a Workington nature reserve has been rescued.

The bird appeared to get stuck at Siddick Ponds – and Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, the RSPCA and volunteers from Workington Nature Partnership worked together this afternoon to free it.

A statement from Cumbria Fire and Rescue said: “This afternoon Workington were called to Siddick Ponds to rescue a swan trapped in the frozen water. The swan was unharmed, and so were the crew (thanks to their specialist equipment). We heard that members of the public were contemplating rescuing the swan themselves.

“Please think twice about going into frozen or icy water to rescue animals. Instead, call 999 straight away and ask for the emergency services to assist you. Frozen water might look safe to walk on, but don’t risk it – you could easily fall through and need rescued yourself.”

On Sunday, emergency services launched a major operation after reports that a child had fallen through the ice into Siddick Ponds. After an extensive search, it was found that it was a false alarm.
