Workington’s United Club continued their fine run of form in the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League.
They scored a 3-2 home win against Division One league leaders, Workington Golf Club A.
Stephen Jackson gave the Golf Club A side a 1-0 advantage with some excellent potting in the first and as Ryan Ismay doubled the lead with a victory in frame two the league leaders looked to be extending the gap at top of Division One.
Frame three needed something significant if the United Club were to stop the rot and with a frame winning break of 51 Peter O’Hagan did just that to pull the score back to 2-1.
Next up Clive Lister was required to use his tactical acumen to close out a fourth frame victory as the United Club cueist completed the comeback at 2-2.
The deciding frame produced a quality encounter with the points flowing from both players.
In needing someone to take the game by the scruff of the neck it was Andrew Mitchelhill who eventually delivered to complete the victory in a remarkable United Club turnaround.
Golf Club A remain top of Division One on 25 points with the United Club three places lower on 20 points.
Division Two leaders Flimby Social moved further ahead in the second tier with a 4-1 away win against Whitehaven’s Rack Shack.
A respotted black ball win for Paul Vickers in the first set the Flimby outfit up nicely and with team mate and captain Geoff Banton proving victorious in frame two the Social side were on a roll.
Making it 3-0 Richard Kirkham showed no effects of his time out for illness over the last couple of weeks but with a Rack Shack win for Adam Morilla in frame four any thoughts of a whitewash were soon erased.
In the final game of the fixture a close frame could have gone either way, however it was Flimby who were to seal the 4-1 match win with a victory by Sal Cakmak.
Flimby are top of Division Two on 21 points with the Rack Shack sitting in third, also in Division Two, on 13 points.
Workington’s Veterans Club made it five wins out of five in all competitions as they defeated Division Two’s Station Road Club 3-2.
Kicking off the clash between the fellow townies Division One’s Vets Club fell over the line in the first as error strewn frame went to Kevin Basnett for 1-0.
The second game produced yet another Paul Smith demonstration of one frame intelligence as the Vets cueist took the match score to 2-0.
Frame three however delivered the performance of the match as Mark Robertson hardly missed a pot in victory of the highest class to pull one back for 2-1.
Station Road’s Mike Walker improved as the fourth frame went along, and in converting it to a victory the fixture went to a decider.
Mark Tunstall started the final frame in confident fashion and in never looking back the Vets player produced his best performance of the season to steer the Vets to a well-earned match victory.
The Vets remain third in Division One on 21 points with Station Road sitting on a Division Two second placed total of 14 points.
Finally, Maryport Social travelled to Workington Golf Club and with a 3-2 victory over the B side the Social outfit recorded their third win of the season.
Maryport’s Ben Scott opened up the fixture with a win in the first but back came the Golf Club with an excellent Ryan Pearson victory in the second for 1-1.
Andrew Scott put Maryport back in front on the back of a win in the third for 2-1, but fighting back it was the Golf Club B’s Paul Brown who took the fourth to take the match to a decider.
Another high-scoring final frame was again in the balance, but in clearing the last few balls it was Maryport’s Gary Miller who took the frame and match to the relief of his team mates.
Maryport are fourth in Division Two on 13 points with the Golf Club B propping up the table one place lower on eight points.
