Shops set to be demolished to make way for Barrow transformation

The demolition of several Barrow properties will begin next year to make way for a £17.5 million scheme to transform the town centre.

Legal notices have been submitted regarding the flattening of 77-79 Dalton Road, 81 Dalton Road, 83 Dalton Road, 10 Stephen Street and 1,2,3 and 4 The Ginnel.

Once removed, the units will make way for parts of the town centre regeneration scheme, which council chiefs hope will create a vibrant destination offering shopping, food, experiences and community spaces to increase footfall and boost the local economy.

Lee Roberts, deputy leader of Barrow Borough Council and its lead member for economic development, said: “These changes are necessary to make way for the exciting regeneration scheme that is being designed to ensure Barrow’s town centre has a thriving future ahead of it.

“The council has been working with any traders affected for some time to find suitable alternative premises where appropriate and required.

“We are entering a transformative period – where the hard work to realise this ambitious regeneration scheme moves on to physical changes to existing buildings, the next stage of the ambition to bring about the positive change we all want for a happy, healthy town centre for the future.”

The demolition notice is required where a building or part of a building is intended for demolition. This notice, which forms part of the 1984 Building Act, is submitted to the local authority for the area which in this case is Barrow Borough Council.

It is hoped work to remove the buildings will begin early in 2023.

Councillor Roberts added: “The demolition notices are another important step on the journey towards a revitalised town centre and a bright future for this area.

“I’m looking forward to seeing this work get underway.”
