Workington MP says he secured £5.4m for town’s new stadium plans – which must go ahead

Hard on the heels of an assessment that a new stadium is vital to Workington’s professional sports clubs, the local MP has pledged continued support for the project.

Workington Reds and Workington Town want to get together and play from a new stadium built on the existing Borough Park site.

Town chairman John Pleasants reiterated over the weekend that for his club it was vital for them to follow the pathway being envisaged by the sport’s new partners IMG.

Now Workington MP Mark Jenkinson has repeated one of his key 2019 election pledges to work with stakeholders to deliver a new sports stadium for Workington.

He said: “That was on the clear understanding that it is based on a sound financial model that is sustainable for the long term, while also delivering enhanced access to facilities for grassroots sports clubs across the constituency.

“And this is exactly what we are getting. On that basis I have successfully secured £5.4m for a new stadium from the secure £23m Town Deal from our Conservative Government.

“This vital cash injection has been augmented with a £1m pledged by Allerdale Borough Council under the Conservative leadership of Councillor Mike Johnson.

“Borough Park and Lonsdale Park are secured for the project, and 2023 needs to be the year the clubs work together to make this happen.

“I look forward to this project taking shape over the coming months – and I will continue to support the clubs and all stakeholders in any way that I can to achieve this ambitious vision.

“The creation of a shared stadium for Workington Reds and Workington Town is vital, not only for their future, but also for the wider regeneration of the Lower Derwent Valley, the town of Workington and the wider Allerdale.”
