Owen Windsor, who spent time on loan with Carlisle United last season, is close to a deal with National League South side Chippenham Town.
The 21-year-old forward scored once in three League Two outings for the Blues before returning to parent club West Brom.
He was released by the Baggies and, hoping to earn a contract in order to restart his career, Windsor has been training with Chippenham since December.
On Tuesday night he played all of the 90 minutes in Chippenham’s Wiltshire Premier Shield 3-1 defeat by Swindon Town.
Windsor had played youth football for Swindon and Southampton, before signed professional terms with West Brom. He then had a series of loan moves, including twice to Cirencester Town.
As well as Carlisle, the young striker gained League Two experience at Grimsby Town (13, 1 goal) and Newport County (just 1 appearance).
Chippenham boss Gary Horgan said: “Owen has been in with us for a couple of weeks, and we’re looking – hopefully – to do something with him.
“It was good to get him some minutes on Tuesday because he’s got undoubted quality, he can play on both sides and through the middle.
“It was really good to get a look at him. He hasn’t played much football of late, so we do need to help him out there, but hopefully he can help us out too.
“We know we’re a tiny bit light in the area, and we’re always looking for additional quality, but we know goals win games.”
Following the club’s 1-0 victory away at Chelmsford City last weekend – thanks to Joe Hanks’ 31st-minute goal, Chippenham will be looking to extend their four-game unbeaten run at home to struggling Weymouth on Saturday.
