Despite torrential rain and strong wind at The Ellis, Workington Zebra Finches kicked off 2023 with their second victory of the season, writes John Hastings.
They overcame the elements to defeat Upper Eden 25-0 and move up to fifth in Women’s Division 2 North.
The team made history as for the first time two married couples played for Workington.
Charlotte and Amy Cammack were the first couple to do this in 2019 and on Sunday they were joined by Linzi and Stacey Carruthers.
The Finches tries came from Beth Adams, Amy Cammack – her first for the club – Linzi Carruthers, Sophie Bowness and Marie Shearman.
The foul weather meant that conversions or penalty attempts were beyond impossible.
Elsa Whelan was a consistent menace to the opposition at full back as she not only crafted dangerous waves of attacks but also produced no-nonsense tackles in equal measure.
She was outstanding, flanked by wingers Rachael Elsley and Linzi Carruthers – the latter playing in an unaccustomed role, but making the most of it with several attacking runs that tested Upper Eden and her try was deserved reward.
In the forwards, captain Charlotte Cammack once again called the shots with Beth Adams and Danielle Easdon among others providing tireless, clinical efficiency.
The Finches will hope to keep the winning habit going this Sunday when they host Penrith Panthers at The Ellis.
